Sugar the Chicken Dog, The Adventures of a Livestock Guardian is the first book in the series. It’s aimed at children ages 2-5 years old, but of course, a little younger or older will enjoy it also.
What’s the Story About?
Sugar loves everything about her chickens and wants nothing more than to protect them. Predators can be a problem for the farm animals so Sugar’s job is very important. In the story, one of the chickens is missing. Sugar needs to put her fears aside and find Hazel. Can she do it before it’s too late?
Children will learn about a livestock guardian’s role on the farm, protecting farm animals.
When Sugar goes to lock the chickens up at night, one of them is missing. She sets out to find her before it gets dark.
She searched everywhere, including the house.
Finally, she realizes that she has to check the woods, which is scary and full of predators.
She finds Hazel but can she reach her in time.
This is a very short version of the story, but I think you get the gist. The book is 35 pages long with full-color illustrations on each page. Your child will love the illustrations and root for Sugar as she searches for Hazel.
The book is under 500 words so makes a great bed-time story. As a Mom, I hated to read books with a lot of text, especially when my child wanted me to read it over and over. Hopefully, you find this, just the right length.

Other Books in Sugar the Chicken Dog series
The chickens are competing in the poultry show and as a livestock guardian, Sugar needs to check on them. This story is more suited for children ages 3-7 as it deals with anxiety and fears. But again, I believe children a little younger or older will still enjoy it.
As the farm grows, Sugar’s Mom thinks she needs help to protect the livestock. Sugar doesn’t want any help and she certainly doesn’t want a brother! The story is perfect for children ages 2-7. If you’re expecting a new baby, this is a great story to help your child with the transition.
