Sugar’s Favorite Dog Treat

Jump to Recipe

This year for Sugar’s birthday I decided to make my own dog treats and this recipe is Sugar’s favorite dog treat. I usually go to the pet store and get something special but one of my blogging friends, The Recipe Bandit has an easy recipe so I thought I would give it a try.

Sugar's favorite dog treat

Her recipe contains 1/2 can of pumpkin, which is full of nutrients. Added bonus!

Sugar is food motivated and being a Great Pyrenees, she’s very stubborn. This is just one trait of a Livestock Guardian Dog. So, having good girl treats is a must when I need her to come inside or get her in the car.

Since making these, I’ve tried several other recipes.

They all have peanut butter as one of the main ingredients. My favorite recipe is made with peanut butter, banana, and honey. This one was the easiest to manipulate probably due to the ripe banana. I tried one with oatmeal and it was so hard to roll out and cut into shapes.

So what’s in Sugar’s Favorite Dog Treat

  • Peanut Butter
  • Banana
  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Honey

This recipe called for wheat germ, which I didn’t have. So after mixing it together, it was a little wet so I added more flour. I think I will try 1/2 cup of oatmeal when I make these next time as a substitute for the wheat germ.

When using peanut butter make sure it’s NOT sugar-free or reduced sugar that contains Xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs.

It is also recommended to use all-natural peanut butter without added sugar or salt but I think Sugar likes Peter Pan best (and so does my family).

I got some cute cookie cutters from Amazon and really like the ones with the plastic hand cover. After cutting dozens of cookies with the stainless steel cookie cutter, my hand was a little sore.

I love making my own dog treats (who knew because I’m not much of a cook)! I like knowing what’s in them plus it’s such a small token of my appreciation to Sugar for all her hard work keeping the chickens safe.
