Sugar Goes to the Fair, The Adventures of a Livestock Guardian Dog is a children’s picture book and the second book of the series. It’s aimed at children ages 3-7 years old, but of course, a little younger or older will enjoy it also.
What’s the Story About?
Sugar is a young Great Pyrenees puppy. She takes pride in her work as a livestock guardian dog and has an overwhelming desire to care for the farm animals. When the chickens enter the poultry competition, it’s her responsibility to check on them.
Going to the fair is supposed to be fun but Sugar gets anxious when traveling to new places. On the way there, she encounters unfamiliar sounds and smells that are frightening to her.
After encountering a big monster and a loud noise, Sugar takes off running but can’t find the truck. What will she do?
Her Dad finds her hiding in the bushes then she receives encouragement from a new friend.
Will Sugar be able to face her fears and intervene to save the chickens?
The book is 31 pages long and about 500 words, plus includes an educational “Did You Know” page about livestock guardian dogs and dalmatians.
This story touches on fears and anxiety in a way that kids can understand. I hope parents will use the book as a tool to talk with their kids about these issues. It’s even a great conversation starter about what would you do if you got lost.
